ISMOR, the world's foremost international conference on defence operational research, was founded in 1984 by the late Professor Ronnie Shephard, who at that time held the chair of operational research (OR) at the UK's Royal Military College of Science at Shrivenham. It has been held annually ever since.

ISMOR is officially endorsed and sponsored by the UK Ministry of Defence and is co-sponsored by the Defence Special Interest Group of the OR Society.  Long-standing support is also provided by the Military Operations Research Society in the US.

Each year, at the Symposium Dinner, a distinguished guest speaker delivers the Ronnie Shephard Memorial Address.

Papers and presentations from the 2011 and earlier symposia are available online.

The 29th International Symposium on Military OR

will be held from

28th to 31st August 2012

at New Place, near Bishop's Waltham, Hampshire, UK.

Papers and posters are welcome on all aspects of the application of analysis to defence and security.  We are especially interested in those that address three challenging, current themes that will each have their own session, introduced by a distinguished keynote speaker:

• Affordability – what does it mean and how do we assess it?

• Support to operations and conflict prevention – new approaches to new issues

• Systems and capability for an uncertain future

The Ronnie Shephard Memorial Address at the Symposium Dinner will be given by Maj Gen Mungo Melvin.  General Melvin, who recently retired from the British Army after 37 years' service, is a distinguished soldier, strategist and military historian and has been engaged with the application of analysis through much of his career.

Attendance is limited to 100 delegates so early application is advised.  Discounted registration rates are available until 30 April.
